Founded in early 2024 and building on the earlier ‘Colloquia’ of 2010-13, the New College Salon has become a highlight of the MCR term card. Once a term, members of the MCR community come together for an evening of intellectual discussion and learning over wine (good wine) which is kindly provided by the Warden of New College.
Since its inception, the salon has provided over a dozen individuals with the opportunity to present on a topic of interest to them, academic or otherwise. Feedback from our community has been positive; students from a wide range of backgrounds are able to connect and find common threads between subjects that may, on the surface, seem wholly distinct.
A call for speakers is sent out at the beginning of each term, with invitations to follow. Speakers are offered the opportunity to conduct a ten-minute speech, followed by questions from attendees and the salon chair. They are also guaranteed guest seats - lucrative, given the salon is typically oversubscribed.
